The best way to get to Arau from Alor Setar is to take one of the regular northern commuter trains (known as KTM Komuter Utara in Malay) which take just 24 minutes.
They are the most frequent and by far the cheapest way to get to Arau from Alor Setar.

The only disadvantage to travelling by KTM Komuter train is that you may not get a seat.
Commuter train carriages are a lot like Tube/Subway trains with seating down the sides of the carriage and a wide central aisle for standing passengers.
The sector of the route between Alor Setar and Arau is usually not that busy as many passengers disembark at Alor Setar on these trains heading north from Butterworth Penang.
If you really need to sit down, the only way to guarantee a seat is to take one of the ETS trains (see below).

The duration of the journey by ETS train to Arau from Alor Setar is slightly quicker at 21 minutes, but you will have to pay quite a bit more to have the luxury of a reserved seat.
