There are ETS Bukit Mertajam to Butterworth trains, however, for this short trip, you are better off taking a much more frequent and cheap, KTM Komuter train.
Both ETS and Komuter (Commuter) trains are operated by Malaysia Railways (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad known as KTM and KTMB for short) and the duration of the journey by either service is only around 10 minutes.
To save money, take the KTM Komuter train as it costs only around 10% of the price of one of the ETS trains (see prices below).

Bukit Mertajam (BM) is the interchange station for both KTM Komuter Utara (Northern Commuter) routes so you can take one of these cheap trains on either line.
The route with the most frequent trains is on the Padang Besar to Butterworth Line.

The train fare for any of the KTM Komuter trains from BM to Penang Sentral Butterworth is only 1.20 MYR.

The train fare for the ETS trains is between 10 - 12 MYR.
The Butterworth ETS / Komuter Train Station is located just a short walk away from the Penang Sentral terminal building from where you can take a bus to most destinations within Peninsular Malaysia or you can take the ferry over to Georgetown on Penang Island.
