If you plan to travel by train from Parit Buntar to Hat Yai in Thailand, the first step of the journey involves either taking an ETS Parit Buntar to Padang Besar fast train (KTM keretapi laju), or you can opt for a much cheaper KTM commuter service (Komuter Utara) to the Malaysia-Thailand border station of Padang Besar.
Once you arrive at Padang Besar station, you can then either connect to one of the Shuttle services to Hat Yai Junction Railway Station, or leave the station and cross over the main road border and continue your journey by minivan, bus or taxi.

It is much easier to wait for the Shuttle, but if you don't want to hang around, you can:
Get a taxi from the bottom of the pedestrian bridge to take you across the border, then in to Hat Yai.
Walk or get a motorbike taxi across the border, then in to town to catch a minivan to Hat Yai.
Or take a much less frequent bus from just outside the immigration area.
