The quickest way to get to the Malaysia - Thailand border is to take the ETS Sungai Petani to Padang Besar train service operated by KTM Berhad (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad).
The duration of the journey from Sungai Petani (SP) to Padang Besar by ETS train is approximately one hour and 10 minutes.
Please note: You can also use the much cheaper KTM Komuter Utara trains (northern commuter) on this route from SP to Pdg. Besar.
These trains are only slightly slower taking one hour and 17 minutes.
The difference between the two services is that on the ETS trains you get a reserved seat.
On the KTM Komuter trains you will probably have to stand for part of the journey (the sector between SP and Alor Setar is very busy).
