By far the best way to travel from Sungai Petani to Bukit Mertajam is to take one of the regular Northern Commuter trains (KTM Komuter Utara) which run every hour or two from the first service in the early morning until late in the evening.
This commuter train operates on the Padang Besar to Butterworth Komuter Route (Laluan) and the duration of the journey from SP to BM is just 23 minutes.

From Bukit Mertajam Railway Station, you can connect to the other KTM Komuter route is this part of Peninsular Malaysia that takes you into Perak state, stopping at:
Simpang Ampat, Nibong Tebal, Parit Buntar, Bagan Serai, Kamunting, Taiping and Padang Rengas.

The fare (tambang) for the KTM SP to BM train is 2.40 MYR.
To travel by Komuter train there is no need to book in advance.
Just turn up at Sungai Petani Railway Station, buy your tickets from the ticket counter and take the next commuter train heading south towards Butterworth.

KTM used to operate the ETS train on this route from Padang Besar but now these long-distance services no longer take the branch line to Butterworth when travelling south from the Thai border, leaving the KTM Komuter trains as the only services that operate between SP and BM.
