Alternative Ways to Travel to Hua Hin from Bangkok:
The Ordinary trains are easily the cheapest way to travel from Bangkok to Hua Hin, but are very slow and often delayed.
If you are flying in to BKK (Suvarnabhumi Airport) it is much easier to take a direct bus from BKK to Hua Hin.
Other easy and much quicker options are to take a minivan / bus from Khao San Road to Hua Hin, or if you are arriving at one of the Bangkok bus stations, most have minibus services to Hua Hin.
Third class Ordinary trains can operate with a variety of carriages, all of which are quite old a run down, so don't expect too much.
Seating can be in the form of wooden seats, or padded seats, depending on what rolling stock they have available.
For shorter journeys like this to Hua Hin, they can be quite good fun and a real authentic rail experience in Thailand.
The carriages are usually quite crowded, with lots of luggage, goods for trade being taken to market and the odd chicken.
Hawkers parade up and down the aisle selling food and drinks and when the train stops at one of the larger stations, you usually get a rush a hawkers trying to sell the goods, so you will never be short of something to eat or drink.
To buy tickets for this service, just turn up at Hua Lamphong railway station and buy your tickets on the day of departure.
Even when they are full, there will always be room for a few more standing passengers.
