This service has a good range of seating options, with all classes of coaches available.
If you want to have a real Thai rail experience, the third and second class seats can be good fun, with all the hawkers selling their goods (food - drinks - various odds and ends that you never knew you needed).
Although the train is a nice way to travel to Hua Hin, it is not the quickest.
Other options you may want to think about are:
Taking a bus or minivan from Bangkok's bus stations, or even from the Khao San Road area.
Taking a taxi or private transfer from the airport or your hotel.
Taking a direct bus from BKK airport to Hua Hin.

You will need to make a reservation for this train if you want to travel on the more expensive carriages.
If you want to travel on the cheaper 3rd and 2nd Class seat coaches, chances are you will be able to get a seat on the day of travel from the station.
