Travel by KTMB train from Kuala Lumpur to Alor Setar (from May 2016), is now only possible on the newer high-speed ETS Trains, as all Intercity Trains from this date have been cancelled on the North - South Line.
If you have the choice, we recommend you take the train rather than by bus, as with the new high-speed ETS Trains operating, travel time is so much faster than the bus.

If you are travelling to Alor Setar to get to Langkawi Island, once you arrive at Alor Setar Railway Station, you can take either a cheap bus or taxi for the 13 kilometre trip to the port of Kuala Kedah where you can catch a high-speed ferry over to Kuah (the main town on the island).

Tickets are good value for this trip, with the economy 3rd class seats being much cheaper than the bus on this route.

Tickets can be purchased directly from the stations in either KL Sentral or Alor Setar or at any other main KTM station within Malaysia.
Much more convenient is to buy your tickets online, either directly from the official KTM website (for a small admin fee) or you can use our search box on our booking page.
Regular high-speed ferries leave Kuala Kedah every one to one and a half hours for Kuah Jetty on Langkawi Island, the first ferry leaves around 07.00 and a the last ferry around 19.00.
Advance booking is available from the ferry companies website, but it is best to just turn up and book tickets the next boat, in case of delays in getting to the jetty.

If you would prefer to travel from KL to Langkawi by bus, there are a couple of ways you can go.
You can either catch a bus from KL to Alor Setar Bus Terminal, then a local bus from there to the jetty at Kuala Kedah.
Or there are a few services a day that will take you from KL to Kuala Perlis Jetty directly, which is where you catch the shortest ferry ride over to Langkawi.
The bus station in Kuala Perlis is located just a couple of minutes walk away from the ferry terminal.
